As we have stated in this entire series Facing and Defeating your Giant(s), we each have a giant or giants that are fighting against us. Giants come in all shapes and sizes. We have spent time over the month of January examining these giants and looking at ways that we are able to defeat them, not simply face them.
What is keeping you in the boat…
In our first post, we spent time looking at the message Jonathan shared this weekend, specifically asking the question: What is keeping you from taking that next step? If you missed that post, I would encourage you to take a few minutes to catch up before reading further.
Jonathan shared several key points on Sunday, each being excuses we use to keep from stepping out of the boat. I wanted to examine each of these key points individually. My hope is this will help us take that next step in defeating the giant(s) we face.
The first key Jonathan shared was knowing that you have everything you need in your hands. I shared this post yesterday: What is Keeping You in the Boat (Part 2). If you haven’t read it yet, check it out before reading this one.
The second key Jonathan shared was making decisions based off of fear.
Making decisions based off of fear…
Sometimes, we make decisions based off emotions, including fear. We allow fear of the unknown to keep us at bay, to keep us from taking that next step. This was definitely true for the servant that had the one talent. Check out the response he gave when questioned by the master.
“Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. 25 I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.”
Matthew 25:24-25 NLT
Fear is a major issue, one that impacts everyone from time to time. The servant told the master that he was afraid he would lose the money, so he hid it. Think about all the times you have allowed fear to keep you from acting, from using your gifts and talents to make a difference in the world.
When we allow fear to keep us from doing what we know to do, we are robbing those around us from the benefits created by our gifts. Fear stops us in our tracks. As we said yesterday, God has given us unique gifts and has done so to make us dependent upon each other. The only way that this works is if everyone operates in their gifts. Our strength is in our diversity.
How to defeat fear…
Are you allowing fear to keep you from taking your next step? If so, make the decision today to not allow fear to have control over you.
Easier said than done. Defeating fear is never easy. If it was, we wouldn’t be having this conversation now. If it was easy, fear would not be such a burden in our lives. I wish I could give you a simple path to defeating fear; honestly, I don’t have an easy answer or path to follow.
However, the best way I know of to defeat fear is by choosing to operate in faith. You have the choice to operate in fear or in faith. When you operate in fear, you forfeit the strength of your gifts. When you operate in faith, you step out of the boat and God gets the glory.
