Check Your Foundation
How Important is Doctrine…
Why is it important to examine your doctrine? Does your doctrine really make that much of a difference in your everyday life?
This is a question that I am sure many of us have asked throughout the last few months. For weeks, we have discussed how it is essential to know what doctrine you are holding to and how it impacts the other areas of your life, such as your paradigm (worldview).
This week, Jonathan continued to teach on this with an emphasis on Luke 4:1-15. In this section of the Gospels, we have the record of the time that Jesus spent in the wilderness, where He was tempted by the enemy.
As we walked through this passage of Scripture, we found that the enemy focused on attacking the doctrine (or belief) that Jesus held, more specifically concerning His very identity.
What Do You Really Believe…
“If you are the Son of God, …” (Luke 4:3, 9 NLT). Three separate times, we have the record of how the enemy tempted Jesus, offering Him a shortcut to what God had already promised. Each time, Jesus responded by quoting Scripture.
“People do not live by bread alone” (v.4).
“You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him” (v.8).
“You must not test the Lord your God” (v.12).
Each time Jesus responds to the enemy with a correct understanding of the Scriptures and how it applied to His life! This is where the rubber meets the road; do we really believe what the Scriptures reveal about who we are and what we are promised? Do we really believe what is revealed in the Scriptures concerning our relationship with Jesus?
It is during these difficult trials where our faith is really tested that we find out what we truly believe. That is where we find out what our faith is really built upon.
What’s Your Foundation?
The foundation of a home has to be determined before you plan the interior design of its rooms. The color of the walls, the design of the floorplan, and the exterior landscaping are all important. But all of these are not as important as the strength of the foundation. When the storm comes, it’s not the color of the walls that will enable the house to stand. It’s not the design of the floorplan. It’s not even the landscaping that protects from the destruction of the storm. The foundation is where the strength is found and that is what determines it your house will stand or collapse.
The same can be said of our doctrine. When the storms of life come knocking at your door, it is not your words that will determine the outcome. Your foundation, your doctrine, is what will determine how you respond. You will always respond out of what you truly believe in your heart!
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash” (Matthew 7:24-27 NLT).
When you receive the negative report from the doctor… Your doctrine will determine how you respond!
When you come home to find your spouse has left you… Your doctrine will determine how you respond!
When your children rebel against you… Your doctrine will determine how you respond!
When you get demoted or displaced at work… Your doctrine will determine how you respond!
When you find that unexpected bill in the mail… Your doctrine will determine how you respond!
Change Your Program…
Perhaps you don’t like the way you have responded in the past. The good news is you don’t have to live with that doctrine forever. You have the power and the choice to change it! Much like reprogramming a computer, you have the ability to change your doctrine.
It isn’t easy to do, but it is possible. And by studying the Scriptures and learning to apply them correctly to your life, you can change your doctrine and see different results in your life!
